Q

What foods should we eat to avoid hypertension, hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia?

*

A

Foods should be taken with the following principles:

  1. Fixed amount at regular intervals; determining total amount according to your physical conditions (avoid eating too much or too little).
  2. Balanced diets with all kinds of foods; less salt, sugar, oil; more vegetables and water; cutting back on animal fat and organs.
  3. Eating more foods that are high in fiber; and replacing staples with oats, Job’s Tears, and unprocessed dried beans (green beans or red beans). Vegetables and whole grains are also excellent sources of fiber.
  4. Try to avoid processed sweets or sugar added foods, e.g. cake, ice cream, condensed milk, flavored milk, canned fruits and preserved fruits.
  5. Choose carefully the means of food preparation; steamed, boiled, stewed, roasted, baked foods or cold dressing mix are preferred. Avoid pan-fried, deep-fried foods and excessive salt and seasoning. Fat portions on meats and skins of poultry are best removed.
  6. Eating out: You can still eat healthy when you go out to social functions. Simply keep track of how much you can eat, enjoy a variety of foods and elicit self-control.
  7. Try to avoid drinking alcohol: If drinking is required at certain social engagements, then you must limit the amount and avoid drinking on empty stomach.

Q

Is obesity related to hyperlipidemia? Do fat people have higher blood?

*

A

Lipid refers to fat in the bloodstream. Therefore obese people have a relatively greater possibility of having high lipids. Overweight often comes with a combination of high triglycerides and lower than normal HDL. Even though thin people are not a high risk group of hyperlipidemia, they are still advised to do regular checks on blood lipid density (total cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL and LDL in the bloodstream).

Q

What cancer screening services are offered for free by government?

*

A

Screening has been proved effective in reducing the mortality of cervical cancer, breast cancer and colorectal cancer. Cancer screening services offered for free include:

  1. Cervical Cancer: female citizens aged 30 and above are subsidized by government to undergo a cervical smear test once a year.
  2. Breast Cancer: female citizens aged from 50 to 69 are subsidized by government to undergo mammography once two years.
  3. Colorectal Cancer: citizens aged from 50 to 69 are subsidized by government to undergo fecal occult blood test once two years.
Please consult local public health bureau or public health center for cancer screening related information.
