In 1989, living in the Taitung area were about 13,000 veterans and their families; many of which were in need of medical assistance. Unfortunately there were no adequate facilities in the area. Veterans in need of medical attention had to travel to Hualien, Taipei , or Kaohsiung . This was inconvenient and time consuming for the veterans and their families.
In order to better fit their needs the VAC, in 1989, requested that the Fonglin VA Hospital set up a clinic in Taitung. A year later a new VA hospital was constructed, and after receiving permission from the Executive Yuan it became known as Taitung Branch of Fonglin VA Hospital. In 1997, it became independent and was renamed as Taitung VA Hospital, making it the 12 th VA hospital in the country.
In Year 2000, VAC Executive Yuan planed to integrate the veterans' retirement and needed medical care; and relocated the Taitung Veteran's Hospital inside the Malang Veterans' Home community. In April 2005, Taitung Veteran's Hospital was designated to be affiliated with Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital . Through clinic expansion, we insist to pursuit the better and quality care.
